♻ The entire life-cycle of vehicles must be taken into account when tackling the decarbonization of road transport. This means reducing the climate impact of the vehicles manufacturing (upstream), their use phase and end-of life. So, attention must be paid to the maintenance and repair of existing vehicles to reduce the upstream manufacturing impact, next to shifting to new mobility patterns and zero emissions vehicles. ❕ But a trade-off is necessary between keeping old vehicles and shifting to new ones. Since the vehicles use phase must be fully decarbonized well before 2050, we also must accelerate the shift to fossil-free cars and trucks. This is in short what I told to RTL tvi. Yesterday, the launch event of the CERAC - Belgian Climate and Environment Risk Assessment Center took place. The CERAC was launched as a response to the massive floods that hit Belgium in 2021 due to climate change. The CERAC will report directly to the national security council and provide forward looking risk assessments to transgressing all planetary boundaries. Not only the consequences of climate change, but also the impact of biodiversity loss, freshwater cycle disturbance, land use change, etc. will be covered by the center. It was a pleasure to participate with CLIMACT to the first study of this new center: assessing whether Belgium lives within it's planetary boundaries. I strongly believe this is an important first step to a deeper and systemic approach to risk assessment and prevention. 🌍Historical decision by European Court on Human Rights 📢 On April 9th, the European Court on Human Rights made a groundbreaking ruling that underscores the critical link between climate action and human rights. Concerned citizen shed light on the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, emphasizing the urgency for action. ⚖️ The Court's verdict holds Switzerland accountable for its failure to adequately address climate change, citing violations of the right to effective protection against the adverse effects of climate change on life, health, and well-being. Switzerland's lack of quantified national limits on greenhouse gas emissions and its failure to meet past emission reduction targets are highlighted as key shortcomings. 🌟 Why does this matter? This precedent-setting decision marks the first time an international court has recognized inadequate climate action as a violation of human rights. It paves the way for legal actions worldwide, compelling both public and private entities to align their efforts with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
